The thing about community is you learn so much ! It's such a gift to share with such an amazing circle of women as we have in San Juan Del Sur. As we practice yoga in peaceful surroundings, enjoy time, as well as get the blood flowing it's always fun to learn new things.

Are you ready to upgrade your wellness routine and discover a new level of strength, mobility, and joy? Welcome to Grateful Surf Yoga & Ayurveda in San Juan del Sur, where we believe that movement is medicine.

Our holistic approach, deeply rooted in the wisdom of Yoga and Ayurveda, is designed to empower movers just like you. We don't just teach poses or lead workouts; we provide you with a diverse, effective toolbox to support your body at any stage of its journey. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete, just starting out, or managing an injury, we are here to help you move well, feel good, and live well.

And we have found the perfect secret weapon to add to your weekly regimen: AquaFit!

AquaFit is a low-impact, high-energy workout that harnesses the natural resistance of the pool to create a cardiovascular powerhouse.

Imagine building explosive cardio fitness, improving serious strength, and increasing flexibility, all while being incredibly gentle on your joints. That is the magic of AquaFit. It’s perfect for every fitness level, from beginner to advanced, offering a fun, full-body session that boosts circulation and leaves you feeling loose in the body and invigorated in the soul. From releasing the hips, to creating length in the body, to getting strong, to feeding the Soul.

We are so passionate about this class because it’s pure fun. As a coach, there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing our community meet their goals, progress week after week, and leave the pool with a smile.

Personalization: The Ayurveda Advantage

What makes AquaFit at Grateful truly unique is our foundation in Ayurveda.

Before you even get your feet wet, we consider your individual constitution (Prakriti) and your current state of balance (Vikriti). This allows us to personalize the class with specific adaptations for every single participant.

We don’t believe in a "one-size-fits-all" approach because your body is unique. Does your body need cooling, calming energy today? We can tailor the pace. Does it need more heat, vigor, and circulation? We can turn up the resistance. This personalized guidance ensures you get a safe, challenging workout that truly honors where your body is today.

Today was Leg Day: A Sample AquaFit Session

Curious what a class looks like? Today, we tackled Leg Day, in the Water and on the sides of the pool for some as we explored postures, exercises, and built a foundation for daily life. While you can perform these on land, the water adds a dimension of resistance, core stability, and joint safety that you cannot get anywhere else.

Here is what the circuit looked like (all performed with mindful, controlled movements):

  • Warm-up: Cardio aerobics and dynamic stretching to the beat of great music to get us toned, loose, and moving!

  • Main Set (3 rounds of 10 reps each):

    • Squats using 1 dumbbell (harnessed water resistance for depth and power)

    • Side lunges with 1 dumbbell (lateral stability and glute activation)

    • 1-leg Romanian Deadlift (RDL) with dumbbell (a core and hamstring challenge requiring immense focus—check the video technique here)

    • 1-leg RDL with leg lift (isolating the gluteus medius)

    • Alternating lunges (cardiovascular burst and endurance)

  • Cool-down: Gentle, flowing movements using the water for decompression and stretch.

It was a blast to see everyone challenge their legs, find their balance, and get a serious conditioning workout with zero joint pain.

The Stress Solution: Why Water is Your Best Friend

Stress is perhaps the #1 silent saboteur of body composition, weight management, and overall vitality. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which encourages fat storage and muscle breakdown. It creates inflammation and blocks our ability to truly rest and repair.

Water exercise is an incredible stress-reduction tool. The sensory experience of being submerged in water is naturally calming, downregulating the nervous system almost instantly. The rhythmic nature of the music and movement in AquaFit creates a moving meditation, actively lowering cortisol and breaking that stress cycle.

When you lower stress, you allow your body's potential to work unfiltered and in turn you heal, tone, and thrive.

Fueling Your Practice

Because AquaFit can be an intense conditioning workout, you must fuel it correctly to see the results and recovery you deserve.

Remember to hydrate intelligently. It’s easy to forget you are sweating in the pool, so ensure you are replacing electrolytes, not just plain water, to keep your muscles firing properly.

Also, be mindful of your protein intake. After a "Leg Day" like ours, your muscles are primed to rebuild stronger. Adequate protein post-workout is essential to support that growth and maintain lean muscle mass.
