What Your Elimination Says About Your Digestion and How To Get It On Your Side
How do we make our bodies work for us? How do we get them to support us in our goals?
In natural medicine and specifically Ayurveda, goals in general are extremely helpful. If the goal is optimal health or peak performance, then that’s going to be a lot different than chasing a temporary result. Ayurveda has a daily routine also knows as dinacharya that, if you allow it, becomes a beautiful, daily practice of coming home to yourself every day and giving your body, mind, and soul exactly what it needs. Nourishment fit for the cells, feeding the body, nourishing the soul.
Our bodies are remarkably brilliant at cleaning themselves. Some people say each cell is a Universe unto itself. This comes from the ancient human wisdom that the patterns we see in the Universe is mirrored in each cell in our bodies. It's an ancient Hermetic principle that has been at the heart of healing traditions for thousands of years. It’s the understanding that you are not just a collection of parts, but a living, conscious ecosystem.
In the Ayurvedic tradition, the mind is viewed as the architect of the body. When we talk about consciousness and vibration, we are moving into the space where biology meets Spirit. The ancient texts, like the Charak Samhita, share that physical health is the result of a clear mind and a balanced spirit: Swastha:
समदोषः समाग्निश्च समधातुमलक्रियः ।
प्रसन्नात्मेन्द्रियमनः स्वस्थ इत्यभिधीयते ॥
Samadoṣaḥ samāgniśca samadhātumalakiyaḥ
Prasannātmeindriyamanaḥ svastha ityabhidhīyate
One whose doshas are balanced, whose digestive fire is balanced, whose bodily tissues and elimination processes are functioning normally, and whose Soul, senses, and mind remain full of bliss, this is the definition of healthy person.
Modern language gives us a new way to describe that relationship. We now understand that our thoughts and our vibration actually communicate signals to our cells.
The best we can do is provide the right environment for these natural processes to thrive.
The formula for staying healthy is pretty simple: eat cooked vegetables, eat only what your body can process ie wait for a bowel movement before you eat again, balance your moods by honoring your soul, increase your vitality, and peace of mind. Sometimes, the most profound wisdom is found in the simplest, most human functions. In the tradition of the Charak Samhita, and as frequently emphasized by modern masters like Dr. Vasant Lad and Dr. John Douillard, the daily elimination is a fantastic diagnostic tool. It is the clearest window into the state of your Agni, or digestive fire, which is the cornerstone of your entire well-being.
So, what does a "perfect" bowel movement actually look like? In a balanced state, it should be well-formed, often compared to the shape and consistency of a ripe banana. It should pass with ease, without straining or a sense of urgency, and ideally occur shortly after waking. A healthy stool is typically a light, brownish-yellow color and, interestingly, should have a relatively neutral or mild odor. If you notice a foul or rotting smell, it is a classic Ayurvedic indicator that ama, or undigested toxins, has accumulated in the system. Ama is said to accumulate and be released into the system and cause various illnesses if food isn't fully digested before we eat again. Think putting more work on top of more work and overloading a system.
One point of common curiosity is the "float test." In many modern circles, floating stool is sometimes misconstrued, but in Ayurvedic wisdom, a healthy stool that floats is actually considered a sign of Nirama, the absence of ama. Because optimal digestion processes food efficiently, the resulting waste is light enough to remain buoyant. When digestion is sluggish or overwhelmed, the waste becomes heavy, dense, and sticky, often causing it to sink and suggesting that your digestive fire needs a little bit of support. I used to follow this system when my child was young and adjust his diet accordingly.
It is important to remember that while there is an ideal, your own prakriti, or unique doshic constitution, influences exactly what you are looking for in a perfect evacuation. Vata-dominant individuals may have stools that lean toward the drier side, Pitta-dominant types might experience faster transit times, and looser stool, and Kapha-dominant constitutions often have a heavier, smoother elimination. The goal of Ayurveda is more about recognizing and fine tuning your personal baseline so you can achieve whatever goals you are working on. When your personal baseline has drifted into imbalance you'll be able to see it. If you find yourself experiencing persistent constipation (Vata), extreme heat or looseness (Pitta), or a feeling of sluggishness or mucus (kapha), it is your body’s way of asking for a recalibration of your diet and lifestyle.
Ultimately, reading these signs shouldn't be a source of stress. Instead, treat your daily elimination as a quiet, private practice of self-awareness. When you eat with attention, choose foods that align with the current season, and respect your body’s need for regular, rhythmic routines, you are building the foundation for long-term health. By paying attention to these simple, daily rhythms, digestion is managed and fulfillment is harmony and fulfillment are one rung on the ladder closer, or atleast not one further away.
Think of your daily habits as the systems that assist this internal cleanup crew. They start with sound sleep, science tells us our brains literally flush out waste while we rest, clearing the way for a fresh start the next morning. Hydration is our next great ally, giving the liver and kidneys the fluid they need to filter and flush what we no longer need. Fiber acts as the broom, sweeping through our system to carry away what the body is ready to release. And, of course, movement keeping your blood circulating ensures those hardworking organs receive the oxygen and energy they need to perform their best and all the other innumerable benefits like endorphins, drive, and so on.
When we shift to supporting our body’s natural intelligence and work with the wisdom of the perfect bowel movement as shared in Ayurveda we are build a lifelong system of care and attention, a connection, a language with our bodies. When we set a goal we take the steps to meet it the goal and make it achievable. Little steps, litte curiosities often lead to big improvements, for us and the people around us.
